Begedil is a classic comfort food in Singaporean and Malay households. Made from creamy mashed potatoes — sometimes combined with minced beef or chicken — these golden patties are shallow or deep-fried until crisp. Commonly served with nasi lemak, soto ayam, or eaten on their own as a snack.
Ingredients
- 500g potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 100g minced beef or chicken (optional)
- 2 shallots, chopped
- 1 stalk spring onion, chopped
- 1/2 tsp white pepper
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 egg, beaten (for coating)
- Oil for deep frying
Instructions
- Boil potatoes until fork-tender. Mash and let cool.
- Sauté shallots and minced meat until cooked. Cool slightly.
- Mix mashed potato with meat, onions, salt, pepper, and spring onions. Form small patties.
- Dip patties in beaten egg.
- Fry until golden brown. Serve hot.
Tips for Crispy, Fluffy Begedil
- Let mashed potatoes cool completely before mixing — this helps patties hold together.
- For a meatless version, add more spring onion or chopped coriander for extra aroma.
- Fry over medium heat to avoid burning the outside before the inside is heated through.
Serving Suggestions
Enjoy Begedil as a side with nasi lemak, soto ayam, or sambal goreng. They also work great as a party finger food with chili dip or cucumber slices.
